Consultants from Appalachian State University Present Results of Grandfather's Energy Survey

In August they returned with energy-saving recommendations that can pay for themselves in three to six years while reducing Grandfather Mountain's carbon footprint by as much as 50 percent. Those Amazing Monarchs are on the Move

monarch butterflyLarge numbers of Monarch butterflies will be passing through the Grandfather Mountain area during the next few weeks on the 2,500-mile migration to overwinter in Mexico. Unique in the wild kingdom, as many as four generations of Monarchs will hatch, grow, metamorphose and reproduce over the course of the coming year before the remarkable migration begins again next fall. It was the warmest August ever at Grandfather Mountain with new record daily high temperatures set on 10 different dates.

79º on Aug. 7 broke previous record of 77º degrees set in 1980.

80º on Aug. 8 broke the previous record of 79º set in 1979.

81º on Aug. 9 broke the previous record of 79º set in 1979.

79º on Aug. 10 broke the previous record of 78º set in 1980.

78º on Aug. 11 broke the previous record of 77º set in 1992.

79º on Aug. 15 broke the previous record of 78º set in 1995 and 2005.

81º on Aug. 16 broke the previous record of 79º set in 1988.

80º on Aug. 24 broke the previous record of 76º set in 1975.

79º on Aug. 25 broke the previous record of 76º set in 1975.

76º on Aug. 29 broke the previous record of 75º set in 1993.

The all time highest temperature ever recorded at Grandfather Mountain was 83º on Aug. 22, 1983.
